Barahona: the South of the DR Few Travelers Know — and Should

In Barahona you can see Bahía de las Águilas, Lake Enriquillo, Playa Los Patos, and the larimar mines — the south of the Dominican Republic almost nobody visits. Look, I've spent years talking about Punta Cana and all-inclusive resorts, and that's fine — it works for a lot of people. But today I want to tell you about a place most of the Dominican diaspora has never set foot in, one that's going to change how you see what the DR really is.

Where Is Barahona and How Do You Get There?

Where is Barahona? Barahona is a province in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, on the Caribbean coast near the border with Haiti. It's not a separate island — it's on the same island of Hispaniola shared with Haiti, though a lot of people ask because it feels cut off from the rest of the country by the Cordillera Central and the Sierra de Bahoruco mountains. Barahona is about 2.5 hours by car from Santo Domingo, the capital.

There are no direct flights from the US — you land at SDQ (Las Américas) and rent a car or take a guagua from there. Barahona's own airport (BRX) has domestic flights, but the easiest and cheapest route is the drive from the capital. It takes you through Azua and gives you a view of the countryside most of us in the diaspora rarely see.

What You Can't Miss

Bahía de las Águilas. That's where you go first. It's a 5-mile stretch of fine sand with no hotels, no resorts, no noise. Just turquoise water, sun, and you. You get there by a dirt road and then a short boat ride from Pedernales — that's exactly why people skip it, and exactly why it's worth the trip. Everyone who's been says it's the prettiest beach in the Caribbean. I believe them.

How to get to Bahía de las Águilas: There's no direct road to the beach — you drive to Pedernales or Las Salinas and take a short boat ride from there. Arrange the boat in advance, especially in high season, because there isn't always one waiting at the dock.

Lake Enriquillo. The largest salt lake in the Caribbean, sitting below sea level, with American crocodiles and iguanas everywhere. It's one of the strangest, most beautiful landscapes on the island — it feels like another planet. At its center is Isla Cabritos, where pink flamingos live undisturbed.

Real larimar. The DR's blue stone — found nowhere else on Earth — is mined near Barahona. You can buy it directly from the artisans at the real price, not the airport markup you'd pay in the capital.

Bahía de las Águilas is one of the most stunning beaches in the country — see how it compares to the rest in our guide to the best beaches in the Dominican Republic.

Quick Budget for the Diaspora

ExpenseEstimate
Hotel in Barahona (per night)$30–70 USD
Boat to Bahía de las Águilas$10–15 per person
Rental car from SDQ$40–60/day
Local food (breakfast + lunch + dinner)$15–25 per person

Barahona is significantly cheaper than Punta Cana. If you're traveling with family, you feel that in your wallet. And the food — chivo guisado (stewed goat), fried fish with tostones, morning mangú — is real Dominican cooking, not the resort buffet version.

When to Go

December through April is the dry season and the most comfortable. But summer (June–August) works too — it's hot, but the sea breeze balances it out, prices drop, and there are fewer tourists. If you're planning to go in July or August, that's the perfect window to find everything available with no lines.

The Honest Take

Barahona isn't for people who want all-inclusive and an infinity pool — that's what Punta Cana is for, and there's nothing wrong with that. Barahona is for people who want to see the real island — the countryside, the untouched beaches, people living their lives without tourism ever having found them yet.

If you're part of the Dominican diaspora and you've been visiting the island for years, go south at least once. I mean it — it'll remind you why we love this country so much.
