The 7-Day Itinerary to See the DR Without Staying Only at the Resort
Not everyone gets 10 vacation days. If you've only got a week, you can still see the real Dominican Republic — not just the resort pool — with a shorter, more focused route: colonial capital, postcard beach and nature, without spending the whole trip on the road.
Before You Leave: What You Need to Know
This route assumes you're arriving through the Santo Domingo airport (SDQ). With only three stops, it works with a rental car or a private transfer/tourist bus between cities — unlike the 10-day route, you don't need to drive yourself if you'd rather not.
First check the guide to DR entry requirements for 2026 (passport, E-Ticket) and the real budget guide if you're traveling with family.
The Route, Day by Day
Days 1–2 · Santo Domingo
You land, rest, and dedicate a full day to the Zona Colonial: the first cathedral in the New World, the Alcázar de Colón, Calle El Conde. It's all walkable, so you don't need a car yet. Full details in the Santo Domingo guide.
Days 3–4 · Punta Cana (1h 30min – 2h from Santo Domingo)
The beach stretch of the route. Two days of white sand, resort life, and the postcard Caribbean — kept short on purpose, because the rest of the trip shows you the DR is a lot more than this. Details in the Punta Cana guide. If you're looking to bring this part's cost down, also check the cheap hotels in Punta Cana guide.
Days 5–6 · Samaná (3h 30min from Punta Cana)
The longest stretch of the route, but worth every minute. Playa Rincón, El Limón waterfall, and — if you're traveling between January and March — humpback whale season right off the bay. Full detail in the Samaná guide.
Day 7 · Samaná → Santo Domingo (return flight)
Buffer day: you drive or get transferred back to Santo Domingo (about 3-4 hours), with enough time for your international flight from SDQ. If your departure is in the evening, there's time for one last lunch in the Zona Colonial before heading to the airport.
Book hotels for the whole route from one place — search by city and compare real-time prices.

Estimated Budget (per person, 7 days)
| Expense | Estimate |
|---|---|
| International flight (round-trip) | $350 – $600 USD |
| Internal transport (car or transfer, 7 days) | $250 – 400 total |
| Hotels (mix of categories, 6 nights) | $300 – 600 total |
| Food (7 days) | $140 – 250 |
| Tours and entry fees (whales, waterfall) | $50 – 100 |
| Extras and gas | $60 – 100 |
In total, between $1,100 and $1,900 per person all-in — a shorter, cheaper version of the 10-day route, ideal if your time off is limited but you don't want to stay only at the resort.
What Do You Miss With the 7-Day Version?
La Romana (Altos de Chavón, golf, Isla Catalina), Puerto Plata (cable car, 27 Charcos, Sosúa) and Santiago (the Cibao, baseball) are left out of this short route. You still get colonial city, beach and nature — but if you can stretch the trip 3 more days, the 10-day itinerary adds those three stops without repeating what you already saw here.
What Nobody Tells You Before This Trip
With only 3 stops, this route involves less driving than the 10-day one, but the Punta Cana–Samaná stretch is still long (3h 30min). Leave early that day and avoid driving at night if it's your first time in the country — motoconchos, slow trucks and poor nighttime signage on the main highways.
I put together this shorter route for the people who write me saying "I only have a week, what do I do?" — this is what I tell them. If you've already done it or have a different variation, tell me about it in the Facebook comments — and if you know someone with limited time off who wants to visit the DR, share this guide with them 🇩🇴🗺️
Frequently Asked Questions About This 7-Day Itinerary
Is a week enough to see the Dominican Republic?
For the essentials, yes: 7 well-organized days let you see the colonial capital, postcard Caribbean in Punta Cana, and Samaná's nature — city, beach and mountain/sea in one route.
Do you need to rent a car for this 7-day route?
It's the most practical option, though with only 3 stops it can also be done by private transfer or tourist bus between cities, without driving.
How much does the 7-day DR itinerary cost?
Between $1,100 and $1,900 per person all-in: international flight, internal transport, hotels, food and tours — less than the 10-day version because there are fewer nights and shorter road stretches.
What do you miss out on doing 7 days instead of 10?
La Romana, Puerto Plata and Santiago are left out. You still get colonial city, beach and nature, but you miss the Cibao, the 27 Charcos, and Altos de Chavón — for those you need the full 10-day route.
What's the best order for this 7-day route?
Santo Domingo first (you arrive via SDQ), Punta Cana in the middle (the longest beach stretch), and Samaná last, returning to Santo Domingo on the final day for your outbound flight.
