Santiago de los Caballeros: the City the Dominican Diaspora Misses Without Knowing It

In Santiago de los Caballeros you can visit the Monumento a los Héroes, wander the Mercado Modelo, catch a baseball game, and try real Cibao cooking. There's a place on this island that never shows up in the tourism ads, that never makes it into the resort packages, and that a lot of us have carried in our hearts since we were kids anyway. That place is Santiago — the Cibao, the country's second-largest city, the one that reminds you the DR isn't just beach and piña colada.

Why Go to Santiago

Santiago de los Caballeros is the economic and cultural capital of the country's interior. A lot of the Dominicans who now live abroad were born here. If your family is from the Cibao and you've never actually gone to visit — with time, no rush, walking the streets — this guide is for you.

The city has history, authentic food, real baseball, and an energy you won't find in Punta Cana. It's the DR that neighborhood kids know from their grandparents' stories.

What to See and Do

The Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración. It's the city's great landmark — like the main plaza of any major capital, but with a panoramic view. It's right in the center of everything and the go-to meeting point. Climb it, walk around it, and you'll understand why the people of Santiago are so proud of their city.

The Mercado Modelo. If you want to bring home something genuinely from the island — larimar, amber, tobacco, Cibao crafts — this is the place. Real prices, no airport tourist markup. Haggling is part of the ritual.

Baseball at Estadio Cibao. If you're traveling between October and January, catch an Águilas Cibaeñas game. The atmosphere is unlike anything you've seen — family, food, Dominican passion in its purest form. A ticket costs less than $10 USD.

Buy your ticket early: Games against Licey or Estrellas during the winter classic season (December–January) fill up fast. Buy at the box office bright and early on game day, or have a local get it for you.

Cibao food. Chicharrón de cerdo from Moca, chivo liniero (goat), pasteles en hoja, a good moro con gandules. This is what people eat in this region and there's no comparison. Skip the restaurants downtown and look for the neighborhood comedores — that's where the magic is.

Budget for 3 Days in Santiago

Hotel (per night, mid-range)$60–100 USD
Daily food (3 local meals)$15–25 per person

Three days in Santiago with everything included — hotel, food, sightseeing, a baseball game — can run $200–350 per person. Far more affordable than an all-inclusive in Punta Cana, and a completely different experience.

How to Get to Santiago

Santiago's airport (AILA — Cibao International) receives direct flights from the US, Europe, and Latin America. From several US cities the flight takes 2–4 hours with airlines like JetBlue, American, and Spirit. From Madrid there are connections via Santo Domingo. Compared to flying into Punta Cana and then driving to the Cibao, flying directly into Cibao is the more comfortable option if your destination is Santiago or the interior of the country.

The Honest Take

Santiago won't give you a beach or a resort — for that, check our guide to the best beaches in the Dominican Republic. What Santiago gives you is something different: the DR that lives, works, dances, and laughs without performing for the camera. It's the city that Dominicans in the diaspora carry in our blood even if we've never lived there.

If your family is from the Cibao and you haven't gone to visit as an adult yet — on your own terms, with your own time — put it on the plan for your next trip. You won't regret it.
