When to Visit the Dominican Republic: the Season Guide Nobody Gives You
Everybody tells you "go to the DR," but almost nobody tells you when. That's the difference between a trip with perfect beach weather and one where you spend three days waiting for the rain to stop. Here's how the climate moves across the island through the year, when Carnival and the whales show up, and when you'll pay less for the same trip.
Dry Season (December to April) — the Safest, the Priciest
December through April is when the weather behaves best: clear skies, little rain, and temperatures between 25-30°C almost every day. It's also when the most people travel — Christmas, New Year's and Easter week send flight and hotel prices through the roof, especially in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. If you can shift to March or April, after Easter week, you get the same weather with a bit less crowd and a lower price.
Rainy and Hurricane Season (June to November)
June through November is officially hurricane season in the Caribbean, with the highest risk between August and October. That doesn't mean your trip is ruined — many days are sunny with a short afternoon downpour — but it's worth checking the forecast closely before booking, especially if you're headed to coastal areas like Samaná or Puerto Plata. In exchange, flight and hotel prices drop significantly, especially in July and August.
Carnival and Whale Watching — the Two Events That Move the Calendar
- Dominican Carnival: every Sunday in February, with the biggest parades in La Vega and Santo Domingo, closing with the National Parade in late February.
- Humpback whales in Samaná: mid-January to late March, peaking in February — they arrive in the bay to mate and give birth.
- Easter week (Semana Santa): one of the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year across the island, especially at the beaches.
If your trip lands in February, you'll get good weather, Carnival in the streets, and a shot at seeing whales on the same trip — but you'll also be paying peak-season prices.
| You're after | Best time |
|---|---|
| Most stable weather | December – April |
| Lowest prices | July – August, September – October |
| Fewer people, good weather | May – June, March – April |
| Carnival | Every Sunday in February |
| Whales in Samaná | Mid-January – late March |

The Truth Nobody Tells You
There's no "perfect" month — every season trades one thing for another. December through April gives you reliable weather but peak-season prices and packed airports. July through October gives you low prices and fewer people, but you need to keep an eye on the weather. If you ask me, March and April are the sweet spot almost nobody takes advantage of: the worst of high season has passed, the weather is still solid, and rainy season hasn't started yet.
