The 10-Day Itinerary That Shows You the Real DR, Not Just the Resort

Everybody asks the same question: "how many days do I need to see the Dominican Republic?" The honest answer is you'll never have enough, but a well-planned 10 days lets you see the colonial capital, postcard Caribbean beaches, the mountains, and the Cibao — without spending the whole trip on the highway. This is the route I'd send any relative asking where to start.

Before You Go: What You Need to Know

This route assumes you arrive through the Santo Domingo airport (SDQ) and rent a car — by far the most practical way to do this loop. Public transport between cities exists (Caribe Tours, Metro) but will eat hours you don't have on a 10-day trip. If you'd rather not drive, every leg can also be done with a private transfer or tourist bus — it just costs more.

First check our guide to travel requirements for the DR in 2026 (passport, E-Ticket) and to a real family budget if you're traveling with kids — this route builds on both.

Mountain road in the interior of the Dominican Republic, ideal for a self-drive trip around the country
Book the car early: in high season (December–April and July–August) rental cars sell out fast at SDQ. Reserve 3-4 weeks ahead, especially if you need something higher-clearance for the mountain stretches.

The Route, Day by Day

Days 1–2 · Santo Domingo

You land, rest, and give a full day to the Colonial Zone: the first cathedral of the New World, the Alcázar de Colón, Calle El Conde. It's the only stop on the route where you won't drive much — everything is walkable. Full details in our Santo Domingo guide.

Day 3 · Santo Domingo → La Romana (1h 30min)

Early departure heading east. La Romana and Casa de Campo are the perfect transition between city and beach — golf, Altos de Chavón, and a coastline that isn't overrun with tourism yet. See our La Romana guide.

Days 4–5 · Punta Cana (1h from La Romana)

This is where you slow down. Two days of white sand beach, resort life, and the Caribbean you see on postcards. It's kept short on purpose — you've already seen the DR is much more than this, and the rest of the route confirms it. Details in our Punta Cana guide.

Day 6 · Punta Cana → Samaná (3h 30min)

The longest stretch of the route, but worth every minute. If you're traveling between January and March, this is also humpback whale season. Time it so you arrive in time for sunset in Las Terrenas.

Day 7 · Samaná

Playa Rincón, El Limón waterfall (by horse or on foot), and, if it's the season, a whale-watching tour. Full detail in our Samaná guide.

Day 8 · Samaná → Puerto Plata (2h)

You cross over to the north coast. With the afternoon free, there's time for the cable car up La Loma Isabel de Torres or a first stroll along Playa Dorada. Full guide at Puerto Plata.

Day 9 · Puerto Plata

The 27 Charcos de Damajagua in the morning (arrive early, it fills up) and Sosúa or Cabarete in the afternoon to close out with beach and snorkeling.

Day 10 · Puerto Plata → Santiago (1h) → flight home

Last stop: the Monumento a los Héroes, the Mercado Modelo, and, if timing allows, a real Cibao lunch before driving back to Santo Domingo (2h 30min from Santiago) for your international flight. If your flight leaves from the Santiago airport (AILA) instead of SDQ, even better — you skip that last leg. See our Santiago guide.

Estimated Budget (per person, 10 days)

ExpenseEstimate
International flight (round-trip)$350 – $600 USD
Rental car (10 days, mid-size category)$350 – 500 total
Hotels (mix of categories, 9 nights)$450 – 900 total
Food (10 days)$200 – 350
Tours and admission (whales, waterfalls, cable car)$80 – 150
Gas and tolls$100 – 150

All told, between $1,500 and $2,650 per person all-in — considerably less than a 10-day package at a single resort, and you see six different regions of the country instead of one pool.

Less Than 10 Days? The Short Version

If you only have a week, cut La Romana and Puerto Plata: Santo Domingo (2 days) → Punta Cana (2 days) → Samaná (2 days) → back to Santo Domingo (1 buffer day for your flight). That's still beach, colonial city, and nature in 7 days, with a lot less driving.

What Nobody Tells You Before This Trip

The main highways (Autopista del Coral, Autopista Duarte, Autovía del Nordeste) are in good condition, but driving in the DR is aggressive — motoconchos, slow trucks, poor nighttime signage. Don't drive between cities at night if it's your first time in the country. Carry cash in Dominican pesos for tolls and small stops — not everywhere takes cards.

I put this route together thinking about how I'd explain it to a cousin who's never been to the island beyond someone's wedding resort. If you've already done it, or have a different variation, tell me in the Facebook comments — and if you know someone planning their first trip to the DR, share this guide with them 🇩🇴🗺️
