Isla Saona: the Honest Guide from a Dominican (2026 Prices)

Isla Saona is, without exaggeration, the most-booked day trip in all of eastern Dominican Republic — and also the one operators most love to sell you with fine print. Here's what's real, what each option actually costs, and whether it's worth paying more or sticking with the basic tour.

What Isla Saona Is

Isla Saona sits inside Cotubanamá National Park (formerly Parque Nacional del Este), at the far southeast tip of the island. It's the classic full-day excursion from Punta Cana, Bávaro, or Bayahibe: white sand beaches almost entirely undeveloped, shallow turquoise water, and an obligatory stop at the famous Natural Pool in the middle of the sea.

The Natural Pool and Mano Juan

The Natural Pool is a sandbank in shallow water where the catamaran stops before reaching the island — the water hits you at waist height, it's crystal clear, and it's where you'll see the famous starfish. Real tip: don't pull them out of the water for the photo — taking them out of the sea hurts them, and several operators already ban it outright.

Mano Juan is the fishing village on the island itself — colorful houses, about 250 residents, and the only place people live permanently on Saona. Not every tour stops there; it's usually part of the premium or private excursions. If you'd like to see something beyond the postcard beach, it's worth looking for a tour that includes it.

Book your Isla Saona excursion ahead of time — spots fill up fast in high season.

What Each Type of Tour Costs

Tour TypePrice per personWhat's included
Standard (group catamaran or boat)$85–120Hotel pickup, Natural Pool, main beach, buffet lunch, local drinks
Premium / VIP (smaller group)$120–200+Everything above + Mano Juan, seafood or lobster lunch, fewer people per boat
Private boat (4-10 people)From $600 totalBoat exclusive to your group, flexible schedule
Private catamaran (full day)From $1,500 totalExclusive catamaran, great for large groups or events

The full excursion takes 9 to 10 hours door-to-door (hotel pickup, transfer to Bayahibe, boat crossing, time on the island, and return), though actual time on the beach and at the Natural Pool is 3-4 hours.

Budget tip: if money is the deciding factor, the standard tour gives you the essentials — the Natural Pool and the main beach — without overspending. Going "premium" makes the most sense if you want to avoid the crowds (standard catamarans can carry over 100 people) or eat something better than a basic buffet.

How to Get There

Almost nobody gets there on their own — Saona is inside a national park and access is regulated, so you need an authorized operator. If you're staying in Punta Cana or Bávaro, the tour includes the transfer to the port of Bayahibe (1-1.5 hours by bus), where you head out by catamaran or speedboat. If you're already in La Romana or Bayahibe, the trip is much shorter.

Want something less crowded? Check our guide to La Romana, where we compare Saona to Isla Catalina — its calmer alternative.

When to Go

The excursion runs year-round, but from December to April the sea is usually calmer, with less chance of cancellation due to swells. From June to November (hurricane season) there's more risk of the tour being canceled or rescheduled for bad weather — it's not common, but it happens.

The Truth Nobody Tells You

Saona isn't a secret or a "hidden" beach — it's the best-selling excursion in the east, and in high season you'll share the Natural Pool with several other catamarans at the same time. If you're after total solitude, this isn't your excursion. But if you want that waist-deep turquoise water photo, real white sand, and a full day disconnected from the resort, it's still one of the best experiences you'll have in the DR — just go in with the right expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Isla Saona

How much does the Isla Saona tour cost?

The standard catamaran or boat tour costs $85-120 per person and includes hotel pickup, a stop at the Natural Pool, the main beach, and a buffet lunch. Premium or VIP options, with smaller groups and a seafood lunch, cost $120-200+. Private boats start around $600 for groups of 4-10.

What's included in the Isla Saona tour?

Almost all tours include transport from your hotel, the catamaran or boat crossing, the Natural Pool stop, time on Saona's main beach, lunch (buffet on standard tours, something better on premium ones), and local drinks. An international open bar, guided snorkeling, or a stop at Mano Juan are usually extra or exclusive to premium tours.

How long does the Isla Saona excursion last?

9 to 10 hours door-to-door, counting hotel pickup, the bus ride to Bayahibe, the boat crossing, and the return. Actual time on the island and at the Natural Pool is about 3-4 hours.

Is it worth paying for the VIP or premium tour?

It depends what you're after. If you want to avoid the crowds of the standard tour (which can carry over 100 people per catamaran) and eat something better than a basic buffet, yes, it's worth it. If budget comes first, the standard tour gives you the essentials — the Natural Pool and the beach — without overspending.

Isla Saona or Isla Catalina?

Isla Saona (from Punta Cana or Bayahibe) has more tour options, the Natural Pool, and the village of Mano Juan. Isla Catalina (from La Romana) is smaller, less crowded, and better for reef snorkeling. If you've already seen Saona or want fewer crowds, Catalina is the better choice.

Can you get to Isla Saona on your own?

Not practically. Isla Saona sits inside Cotubanamá National Park and access is regulated — only authorized operators can bring tourists in. Almost everyone arrives through an organized tour from Punta Cana, Bávaro, or Bayahibe.
