🗺️ Long Weekend

The 5-Day Itinerary for a Long Weekend in the DR

You don't need a full week off to really see the Dominican Republic. A long weekend — 5 days — is enough to see the colonial capital and enjoy postcard-Caribbean Punta Cana, without staying locked in the resort pool.

Before You Go: What You Need to Know

This route assumes you arrive through the Santo Domingo airport (SDQ). With only two stops, it's the simplest of the three routes — it can easily be done by private transfer or tourist shuttle between cities, no need to drive yourself.

Check the DR entry requirements guide for 2026 first (passport, E-Ticket), and the real budget guide if you're traveling with family.

Got more time? If you can stretch the trip, the 7-day route adds Samaná (whales, Rincón Beach) to this same base, and the 10-day route adds La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Santiago too.

The Route, Day by Day

Days 1–2 · Santo Domingo

You land, rest, and spend a day in the Colonial Zone: the first cathedral of the New World, the Alcázar de Colón, Calle El Conde. Everything is walkable, so you don't need a car yet. Full details in the Santo Domingo guide.

Days 3–4 · Punta Cana (1h 30min – 2h from Santo Domingo)

The beach stretch of the route and the heart of this short trip: two full days of white sand and postcard Caribbean. Details in the Punta Cana guide. If you're looking to cut costs on this part, also check the cheap hotels in Punta Cana guide.

Day 5 · Punta Cana → Santo Domingo (return flight)

Buffer day: you drive or get transferred back to Santo Domingo (1h 30min – 2h) with enough time for your international flight out of SDQ. If your departure is late, there's time for one last walk through the Colonial Zone before heading to the airport.

In total, between $870 and $1,610 per person all-in — the most affordable of the three routes, ideal for a long weekend or when your free time doesn't allow for more.

What You Miss With the 5-Day Version

Samaná (whales, Rincón Beach, El Limón waterfall), La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Santiago are left out of this short route. You still see colonial city and beach — but if you can stretch the trip a few more days, the 7-day itinerary adds Samaná without duplicating what you already saw here, and the 10-day itinerary completes the whole route.

What Nobody Tells You Before This Trip

With only 2 stops, this is the route with the least driving of the three, but don't get too comfortable: the Santo Domingo–Punta Cana stretch still takes 1h 30min to 2h, so avoid leaving too late or driving at night if it's your first time in the country.

I put together this short route for the people who write me saying "I only have a long weekend, what do I do?" — this is what I tell them. If you've already done it or have a different variation, tell me in the Facebook comments — and if you know someone short on time who wants to go to the DR, share this guide with them 🇩🇴🗺️

Frequently Asked Questions About This 5-Day Itinerary

Is 5 days enough to see the Dominican Republic?

For a long weekend, yes: with 5 days well organized you see the colonial capital and postcard-Caribbean Punta Cana — it's not the full route, but you get out of the resort bubble without needing a full week.

Do I need to rent a car for this 5-day route?

It's not essential. With only 2 stops, a private transfer or tourist shuttle between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana works fine if you'd rather not drive.

How much does the 5-day DR itinerary cost?

Between $870 and $1,610 per person all-in: international flight, internal transport, hotels, food, and a tour or two — the most affordable of the three routes because it has fewer nights and only one road leg.

What do I miss doing 5 days instead of 7 or 10?

Samaná (whales, Rincón Beach), La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Santiago are left out. You still see colonial city and beach, but for nature and more stops you need the 7- or 10-day route.

What's the best order for this 5-day route?

Santo Domingo first (you arrive through SDQ), then straight to Punta Cana for the beach days, returning to Santo Domingo on the last day for your departure flight.
